Printing Terms

Bleed
An image that extends to or past the edge of the sheet or page.

Camera ready
Mechanical artwork that is ready for film making. See print ready.

Imposition
The layout of pages on a press sheet.

Folding dummy
A sample of the final printed product, folded and assembled. Can be made to actual size or in miniature.

FPO
For position only. Refers to images used as placeholders in a document.

Gang-Run
High quantity print jobs imposed on a press sheet with other high quantity jobs, printed simultaneously to lower printing cost. Color quality is not guaranteed.

Mock-up
A sample of the job to be printed; does not need to be 100% of the finished size.

Orphan
The first line of a paragraph printed by itself at the bottom of a column or page.

Pixelation
Visible individual pixels of a bitmapped image.

Preflight
Checking a document file to be certain it is ready for raster image processing.

Print ready
A file that is ready for raster image processing. The digital equivalent of camera ready.

Raster image processing
A file that is ready for raster image processing. The digital equivalent of camera ready.

Trapping
The process of compensating for misregistration on the printing press by printing small areas of overlapping color where objects meet.

Widow
The last line of a paragraph, printed by itself at the top of a column or page.
